Monzo has added a new feature to its banking app to allow customers to make charitable donations with just a few clicks.
This feature is, according to the bank, one that has been requested for a long time, and it allows customers to either make a one-off donation or set up a recurring payment to one of the chosen charities listed.
Carefully Selected Partners
At launch, there are 8 charities that have been chosen that customers can donate to. Monzo has to determine a fixed list in order to partner with them in the correct way. The bank has said that they have chosen the charities to represent the causes that existing customers already donate to the most, and that align with the values of the bank.
The bank has also said that the list of charities may change in future, and could grow. They are in talks with various charities and are welcoming customer suggestions for other charities that could be partnered with. Customers can make a suggestion through the charities page on the app.
The 8 charities currently available are:
- Trussell Trust — a charity that provides emergency food supplies and other support services throughout the UK, including the provision of a large network of food banks
- GiveDirectly — an organisation that lets donors make direct payments to some of the world’s poorest people.
- Muslim Hands — this charity is dedicated to helping people from all around the world — of all backgrounds — who have suffered from natural disasters, poverty and conflict.
- MyBnk — this organisation provides various financial education programmes to young people aged from 5 to 25 through various youth groups and schools across the UK, all led by experts.
- Sickle Cell Society — a charity that supports people who suffer from Sickle Cell Disorder, and ensures they have representation.
- Stonewall — an organisation that provides housing support for LGBTQ+ people in the UK.
- Surviving Economic Abuse — this charity helps to save the lives of people who are suffering in a relationship where they are the victim of economic abuse.
- Teenage Cancer Trust — the specialist UK charity that offers care to younger people going through cancer.
Easier To Donate
While some may view this list as a little limiting, the whole point is to make it easier than ever to donate to some of the most popular charities that Monzo customers already contribute to. Monzo have done all the hard work to partner with these organisations, so that customers can make payments in just a couple of button presses.
Customers can either use the ‘Donate to charity’ button on their home screen, or find the list of charities in the Payments section. Any donations made will show up as ‘Charity’ in the Trends list, while recurring donations will also show in the upcoming scheduled payments section of the app.
100% of donations go to the charity — Monzo takes no fees. The only downside is that Monzo cannot add Gift Aid, but for anyone wishing to add Gift Aid to their payment, Monzo has added the alternative of a direct link to the charity’s website. It removes some of the convenience but ensures charities can receive the additional government payment.
