Founded as Bank in Winterthur, UBS began life in 1862 at the beginning of the Swiss banking industry. Bank of Winterthur merged with Toggenburger Bank in 1912, forming the Union Bank of Switzerland. Union Bank of Switzerland merged with longtime competitor Swiss Bank Corporation in 1998 to form the current incarnation of UBS.
UBS is the world’s largest manager of private wealth, with half of the world’s billionaires on its client list. The bank is famously discreet and ranks both first and second (Switzerland and United States) on the 2018 Financial Secrecy Index.
