The bank began life in response to the Glass-Steagall Act, which forced banks at the time to split their commercial and investment banking businesses. Morgan Stanley divested from JP Morgan and to abide by this rule and opened its doors in September 1935. The current incarnation of Morgan Stanley came about after the original company merged with Dean Witter Discover and Co in 1997. At that time, the bank was renamed Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Discover and Co, but this reverted to Morgan Stanley in 2001.
Morgan Stanley operates internationally and has offices in more than 40 countries and over 50,000 employees across the world. The bank has three primary divisions; institutional securities, investment management and wealth management. It works with governments, institutions, corporations and individuals.
Institutional Securities is currently the most profitable of Morgan Stanley’s three segments. This arm of the bank works with institutions to provide services including mergers and acquisitions, real estate and project finance, capital raising, restructuring and corporate lending. Institutional Securities also includes equities and fixed income operations.

It is one of the biggest wealth management companies in the world, managing trillions of dollars in assets.
