About Adam & Company
Founded in 1983, Adam and Company is a division of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), catering for private banking customers with services including investment management and financial planning. The bank is based in Edinburgh and is named for Adam Smith, a prominent Scottish economist during the Enlightenment era.
Adam and Company was acquired by RBS in 1993 and added to their Wealth Management Services portfolio. RBS has a total of four private banking brands; the others being Coutts & Co, Child & Co, and Drummond Bank. Adam and Company was made a subsidiary of Coutts, the largest private bank in the UK, in 2014 and consolidated into RBS’ Commercial and Private Banking arm.
It was announced in 2018 that, in order to comply with new regulations that require retail banking and investment banking operations to be ring-fenced away from each other, all personal private, business and commercial customers of RBS will be transferred to Adam and Company, which will then be renamed The Royal Bank of Scotland PLC after the transfer has been completed.
